My 401(k), planned quite carefully to grow over the long term, is down 6.1 percent for the year. Anybody beating that?

Yeah, it sucks, but you're not planning on retiring next year, are you? (This is a bigger concern for those who are.) I hate to be the defender of the market economy, but the emphasis should be "long term" as you say. This too shall pass. Up years are on the horizon.
