We had a similar experience here in DC- by 7 PM the Hawk n Dove and the other bars on the Hill were too crowded to find a place to stand so we watched at Heather's house. I had my 'electoral bingo' maps and crayons. At 11 PM we heard the announcement on Comedy Central and flipped back to CNN to see their coverage. Afterwards there were crowds in the streets, fireworks, and people driving through the neighborhood honking their horns and shouting 'OBAMA'. It was a good time to be in DC.

Regarding your last point: If you think that racism and bigotry has started to fade in this country, just look at the local ballot measures that passed yesterday. They indicate the majority in some states wish to limit the rights of immigrants and homosexuals, and end affirmative action measures. Also Maryland will have slot machines soon. Ugh.
