Less than the sum of its parts

I got a e-mail recently advertising an acrobat conference. Wow, how did I end up on a mailing list for acrobats? Cool! Then I read a little more…

” The Adobe Acrobat & PDF conference is the largest gathering of PDF professionals anywhere and boasts 80 sessions with eight separate tracks that address a range of PDF solutions for creating, securing, distributing and managing PDF documents.”

Okay, that doesn’t sound like any fun. Though if there’s a Microsoft PowerPoint & PPT conference, that would probably be worse.

Don’t stop the voting!

I gotta have more campaign. It’s the best thing on TV. It’s the best way to kill time on the Internet. It’s the best reason to buy a newspaper – all those complicated charts and maps of proportional and winner-take-all delegate counts. And now it will go on for months!

Would you rather elect a businessperson or a performer? (I lean toward performers.)

Let’s get this baby in the air

Back then, there were things I hated about my blog. It was a lot of work. Sometimes my readers took it a little too seriously. Sometimes I took it a little too seriously. I gave it up in 2005.

Since then, I’ve often thought about getting back into the blogging hobby. It’s kind of an obsessive itch.

It’s going to be different this time. Yes, I still intend to post something at least once a day. Perhaps more. But it won’t always be a piece of writing. Sometimes it will be a photo, sometimes a link to a video, sometimes just a random headline.

The point is to have fun. It’s also a chance to experiment with online tricks and writing in a forum where nobody’s going to get hurt. I hope you like it and leave lots of comments!

The Gettysburg Address

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate — we can not consecrate — we can not hallow — this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us — that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion — that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain — that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom — and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.
