OK Go do their thing for Chevy

The band OK Go has won a lot of fans with their awesomely complicated, manually constructed music videos. Now, here they are performing their services for a new Chevrolet commercial:

How do they do it? I don’t know!

In fact, I have little information about this ad, such as how they got all the pianos into the desert, or whether it was really done in one take. (I think probably not. Also, the mix sounds way too good for all the audio to have been recorded in a moving car.)

The song is OK Go’s Needing/Getting.

This commercial looks expensive but worth it. OK Go is popular among young fans, the sort of customer who might also shop for a compact car. And the ad, while honest about being a paid commercial, is tuned to the sensibilities of the band, since the car is used as an actual musical instrument.

So once again, OK Go manage to sell out while maintaining artistic credibility. How do they do it? I don’t know!

This appears to be a web-only commercial; it’s not running in the Super Bowl. But it is teased in a real Super Bowl ad for the Chevy Sonic:

The song running during that Super Bowl ad, by the way, is a new tune called “We Are Young” by Fun., featuring Janelle MonĂ¡e. (It isn’t an OK Go song.)

That ad is by Goodby, Silverstein & Partners.
