Rick Perry reminds us he’s a bad debater

Rick Perry’s campaign is out today with an extraordinarily risky television ad. Take a look:

The commercial attempts to turn Perry’s stumbling performance in the November 16 debate from a negative to a positive. (A performance which, as noted on this blog, caused a surge of usage in the press of the phrase “Oops Moment.”)

The new commercial begins with a short clip of Perry forgetting what he’s talking about during the November 16 debate. Cut to the governor in a Reaganesque denim shirt, speaking with a folksy twang:

“You know, we’ve all lost our train of thought before, but not many have done it on national TV. Now if you want a slick debater, I’m obviously not your guy. But if you want a clean house in Washington with a balanced budget amendment, a flat tax, and a part-time Congress, I’m your man. I’m Rick Perry and [looking off-camera] what’s that line again? I’m Rick Perry and I approve of this message.”

According The Washington Post, the campaign plans to air the commercial in Iowa. (And possibly on The Tonight Show? For some reason the spot is labeled “Leno Ad” on YouTube.)

Will this commercial convince Republican primary voters that Perry isn’t a dimwit in way over his head? I can’t imagine it will, it’s a cute ad anyway. Given Perry’s poll numbers, his campaign is probably willing to try anything.
