The invisible Mercedes

German ad agency Jung von Matt and Mercedes-Benz have rigged up an invisible car. Neat stuff. Watch this:

As the ad explains, “We covered our car with LEDs. A camera on the other side of the car transmits the image to the LEDs.” The message is that the zero-emmision, fuel-cell-powered car is “invisible to the environment.” Technology blogs have identified the camera used for the stunt as a Canon 5D Mark II DSLR.

Safety, perhaps, has taken a back seat when you’ve built a car other drivers can’t see. But while the “invisible” car is real, it’s just a one-off gimmick for a marketing stunt, so you aren’t likely to bump into it by accident. For something invisible, it sure grabs your attention.

Bonus: James Bond fans, of course, will recall 007’s invisible Austin Martin from 2002’s “Die Another Day.” As Q explains: “Tiny cameras on all sides project the image they see onto a light-emitting polymer skin on the opposite side. You see, to the casual eye it’s as good as invisible.”
