At the beach

I spent a lot of time relaxing on Ipanema and Copacabana, the two beaches near the Piratas hostel. Here's Copacabana beach.

And here's the main drag through Ipanema.

I tossed out my worn-out flip-flops and bought some Brazilian-made Havaianas, which are ubiquitous around Rio.

The beaches are great places to ride bikes and run.

Ipanama is so nice it has likely ruined every other public beach for me forever. The sands are spacious and soft. Vendors bring you beer and snacks. Everyone looks gorgeous. The whole place is surrounded by mountains in the disance. It's just perfect.

The classic bossa nova song "The Girl from Ipanema" was written at a restaurant a few blocks from here.

Copacabana.
